The Culturally Adapted Cognitive‐Behavioural Therapy (CA‐CBT) Manual for English-Speaking People of Caribbean origin in Canada (CAMH, 2011) was initially developed in 2011. The first iteration of this work was the product of an intensive development process including: a detailed literature review, focus groups with English‐speaking people of Caribbean heritage living in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and interviews with mental health workers who provide services to this population.
Following this research and community feedback, the manual was produced and then pilot tested in the community. The lessons learned from the pilot testing, from follow‐up consultations with the English‐speaking Caribbean therapists who delivered the CA‐CBT interventions and their clients were then used to produce the first iteration of this manual.
In 2023, with funding from Ontario Health, a review process began to update the original manual so that it reflects current literature and best practices, and also implement learnings from the application of CA-CBT in community over the last decade. In addition to this work, a new course, a community of practice and a supervision framework for clinicians are also being developed to support the ongoing use of CA-CBT in practice.
