Preliminary studies suggest that people with bipolar disorder show features of accelerated aging, including high rates of age-related physical conditions, such as high blood pressure (hypertension), metabolic imbalances and autoimmune diseases. Studying the biological processes related to accelerated aging in young people who are in the early stages of bipolar disorder may lead to a better understanding of bipolar disorder and the development of new treatments.
In our study, we are exploring aging patterns in people with bipolar disorder compared to those without bipolar disorder. You may be eligible to participate if you have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, or as a healthy volunteer.
We are looking for participants who:
- are between 18 and 35 years of age and
- have a diagnosis for bipolar disorder type I/type II
OR
- are healthy volunteers between 18 and 35 years of age .
If you take part in the study, over a period of 12 months, you will come to our downtown Toronto clinic for 4 study visits, where we will collect blood samples. Each of these visits will be followed up with 1.5- hour phone calls or video assessments. Participants will receive compensation for their time.
