"I feel like they [the pictures] portray a sort of an interesting dichotomy of the pandemic experience. Earlier on, things felt much better, actually, in some ways, and harder in others. I felt the ways in which we are blocked out of certain experiences (for example, I didn't graduate) was much more clear. Now the effect of the pandemic is much more obscured. These are both locations that I see fairly frequently. I think that change to the day to day aspect — not necessarily big things, but just the way that it changes the little things – is sort of more what I was focusing on with my photography."

“Ich bin Gimpft” (I am vaccinated)

"I am Hutterite, and I was vaccinated against COVID-19 to protect the people I care about, to advocate for the scientific and educational community, and to honour the privilege of having access to vaccinations. On the left, is the Manitoba vaccine sticker in the Hutterite dialect. During the vaccine distribution, a relative printed vaccine stickers in our language, to support Health Canada and the fight against Covid. This photo depicts two sides, Hutterites and people of the general public; however different we may be, we both chose to be vaccinated. We were, and are, in this together, despite our differences."

Light at the end of the tunnel?

"It's going to be okay!" "We can already see the light at the end of the tunnel!" These are phrases that are being used and reused hundreds of thousands of times during the pandemic. Over time, this empty and capricious encouragement erodes our faith in them and our hope. Quarantine, masks, school closures, school reopenings, hybrid mode (which makes no sense since one day we are at school and then the other we are at home, and it does not help at all to limit the transmission of the virus), etc., we are exasperated by the rapid and unreasonable alternation of light and shadow, as in a tunnel. Some say the vaccine is the light at the end of the tunnel: how do we know it's just another false hope?

"The reason why I selected this photo was because I really wanted an image to capture my feeling of being overwhelmed and just feeling almost anxiety-inducing, because that was my feeling during COVID, about the vaccines in particular. Just going through news – every day seemed like breaking news — so it just felt really overwhelming."

"The picture with the reindeer was when I was working at a library, and in the corner, there's a little sign that says, “Masks are a mandate at the library.” So, everybody had to wear a mask. I ended up putting the masks on the reindeer, and then people thought it was pretty funny. Also, that process behind it is kind of just like, where does it end? I personally don’t believe in mandating masks or vaccines; I just believe that everybody should be allowed to make their own choices about what they want to do and I feel like they should respect other peoples’ choices."

"This time is very gloomy for many people, many also lost loved ones during this time. So it just again shows and represents how even I had like a lot of vaccine hesitancy in the beginning. I didn’t want to take the vaccine.  But after I kind of got more educated on the benefits of the vaccine, how it works, and once I got some statistics about how many people have taken the vaccine and reviews, etcetera, and the positive change it’s making, it kind of encouraged me to further take the vaccine at the end."
