By advancing research, fostering collaboration and sharing knowledge, we strive to bring about meaningful change in the lives of those affected by mental disorders within the criminal justice system, and for our communities.
In Canada, approximately 20% of people who have contact with the criminal justice system meet the criteria for a mental illness or substance use disorder. CAMH’s Forensic Psychiatry Division is a specialized department dedicated to the assessment, treatment and management of individuals with serious mental illness or substance use disorders in the forensic mental health system or correctional settings.
Our research has had an international impact that is shaping policy and providing a better understanding of the relationship between violence and mental disorders, how services are best delivered in correctional and forensic mental health settings, and efforts toward prevention and early intervention to enhance community safety.
We are focused on integration with clinical services, standardizing patient care and assessment pathways within our model of care, collaborating with community partners, and teaching and research excellence — all within a framework that prioritizes equity, diversity and inclusion. With the development of a Forensic Patient and Family Council, we aim to incorporate the voices of patients and their families in developing our research priorities.
