Course Overview

The Concurrent Disorders: Treatment Approaches and Applications course prepares health care professionals to apply best practices and approaches in treating people with concurrent mental health and addiction disorders. 

Using case-based and self-reflection instructional strategies, the course focuses on best practices and approaches to screening, assessment, treatment planning and case management for people with concurrent disorders. It also addresses the importance of integrated, recovery-oriented care and the client-clinician relationship within a client’s care journey.
  

Audience

The course is for professionals in health and social services who have direct patient care responsibilities. The audience includes professionals in these disciplines:

• Allied health
• Counselling and psychotherapy
• Criminal/Juvenile justice
• Nursing
• Medicine
• Occupational therapy
• Psychology
• Psychiatry
• Social services
• Social work
    

 Prerequisites 

• Participants must have experience in providing clinical treatment and care for individuals who have concurrent mental health and substance-related and addictive disorders. The course will not teach fundamental information about concurrent disorders.
• Participants also must have direct patient care responsibilities. The clinical practice experience is a prerequisite for participants to be able to fully participate in and complete the course activities.

Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

• Describe the continuum of severity and complexity related to CD.
• Discuss the importance and application of the BPS+ model.
• Explain the importance of integrated treatment approaches in CD.
• Identify the necessary elements to build the therapeutic alliance between client and care provider.
• Discuss the role of unconscious bias, attachment, countertransference and self-reflection in the relationship with clients.
• Describe the features of comprehensive screening and assessment processes within an overall treatment approach.
• Apply specific treatment approaches for CD.
• Discuss systemic and ethical issues implicated in the treatment of CD. 
    

Faculty

The course is led by CAMH staff who are experienced clinicians, providing treatment to clients with concurrent disorders.
  

Minimum resources required

Participants require regular access to a personal computer or mobile device with a strong internet connection.
  

Delivery Method

This online course provides a mix of interactive (i.e., online discussions, facilitator consultation) and asynchronous (i.e., anytime) learning experiences. There are eight modules.
  

Time commitment

Learners will need to dedicate 3-5 hours per week on this course.
