CAMH’s Best Practice Spotlight Organization (BPSO) initiative was formally launched in September 2022 as a three-year partnership with the Registered Nurses Association (RNAO). By joining the BPSO initiative, CAMH is optimizing health outcomes through the systematic implementation and evaluation of RNAO's clinical Best Practice Guidelines (BPGs). As we are less than a year from graduating from this program, we are highlighting some of the incredible work being completed at CAMH to support evidence-based practice cultures.
This feature highlights Sheldon Hubert, a registered nurse supporting the Forensic General Unit C (1-4), who has been at CAMH since 2010. Learn more about Sheldon and his contributions to CAMH's BPSO journey below!
“I became a Best Practice Spotlight Organization (BPSO) champion because it allows me to raise awareness of evidence-based knowledge and how that improves patient outcomes.
I’ve learned so much from the BPSO program: how to gain insight into changing my colleague’s perspectives around using evidence-based guidelines for the better and how to lead in creating positive change through magical learning (a-ha) moments. By sharing information and making it relevant to our own patient populations, units and programs within CAMH, champions are truly influencing the care that CAMH provides.
I’ve been actively engaged in rolling out the TIDES/BPSO learning modules that were carefully created by multidisciplinary teams at CAMH. It’s been amazing interacting with my fellow team members to connect TIDES principles and BPSO guidelines, making them relevant to the crucial work that we do with our own patients within the forensic program.
Implementing best practices from the BPSO program has definitely impacted how we care for patients. Our team was able to really connect and work more effectively together to support certain patients who have challenging behaviours.
I believe that exercise is a beneficial antidepressant and try to live a balanced life by being as physically active as possible. I also have a new obsession with creating my own mixed teas and feel they are good for the soul. After learning that any herb and spice can be mixed into a tea, I’ve enjoyed trying adventurous flavours; I’m always looking for comfort in a well-mixed brew!”
