Areas of Research
Dr Husain has experience leading clinical research studies in psychotic spectrum disorders, including clinical trials of novel pharmacological agents and psychosocial interventions. He is leading the development of the clinical high risk (CHR) for psychosis clinical research service at CAMH. Dr Husain’s work aims to understand the biology of schizophrenia spectrum disorders, including individuals with CHR. He is currently leading a positron emission tomography (PET) study evaluating synaptic density in individuals with CHR. Dr Husain is also leading a clinical trial of a psychosocial intervention for youth with CHR and a Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) funded clinical efficacy trial of culturally adapted psychosocial interventions for individuals with early psychosis. His research has the potential to inform the evidence base for novel approaches to treatment of psychosis spectrum disorders to improve outcomes for affected individuals. His research aligns with the development of a CHR for psychosis clinical research service in the Slaight Centre for Youth in Transition at CAMH where he is medical head. The alignment of his research with his clinical and administrative roles has the potential to inform service design and the delivery of evidence-based care for young people at CHR for psychosis and those with early psychosis locally, nationally, and internationally.
Dr. Husain’s work spans across four continents and aims to help to build capacity and form international partnerships. He has established links with academic centers in Canada, the UK, Pakistan and Nigeria.
