INNOVATE is a training initiative designed to build the capacity of researchers to meaningfully engage youth in research as collaborators, decision-makers, and leaders. Rooted in the McCain Model of Youth Engagement, INNOVATE provides principles and best practices to:
Foster authentic, intentional, and inclusive youth engagement at all stages of research, from design to knowledge translation;
Develop equitable partnerships between researchers and young people, ensuring that diverse youth voices inform and enhance research processes;
Provide practical guidelines and a comprehensive curriculum to support researchers in creating effective, mutually beneficial partnerships with youth; and
Address barriers and support capacity development in youth engagement, as identified by researchers and youth themselves.
INNOVATE was developed collaboratively by researchers, youth engagement specialists, and youth advisors. The project reflects leading research in this field and the best practices developed by the Youth Engagement Initiative at the McCain Centre.
INNOVATE 2.0 is a substantive revision of the original INNOVATE project by the McCain Centre Youth Engagement Initiative (YEI) and derived from their leading work in this field. INNOVATE 2.0, developed by a youth-researcher collaboration, is a resource for youth engagement in mental health research.
INNOVATE 2.0 develops the evidence-based and practical approaches in the original guidebook through practical experience, critical discussion, and an equity-driven lens. This revision also offers expanded content on evaluation, reporting, historical context, and anti-oppressive practices, and is designed to prepare researchers to effectively engage youth on a diverse range of projects. INNOVATE 2.0 will appear in two open-access formats: as a guidebook and as an e-Learning training.
INNOVATE 2.0 e-Learning
INNOVATE 2.0 e-Learning is an online, asynchronous training for researchers on the principles, practices, and potential challenges in youth engagement. Developed in collaboration with the CAMH Education department, this content is optimized for self-directed learning. The e-Learning is now live — you can explore it here.
INNOVATE 2.0 Guidebook: Coming Soon
INNOVATE 2.0 Guidebook is a standalone reference guide that captures the principles and practices of effective youth engagement. This is the core text of INNOVATE 2.0, and the most comprehensive distillation of YEI practice. The revised Guidebook will be available summer 2026.
Published in 2019, the first edition of INNOVATE Research: Youth Engagement Guidebook for Researchers is a comprehensive guidebook that walks researchers through the steps of engaging youth in research activities, from developing the research question through to knowledge translation. The guidebook offers concrete examples, specific recommendations, and worksheets to help researchers work through the engagement process.
The original INNOVATE project was a collaborative project funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), bringing together youth and researchers from the McCain Centre at CAMH, Wisdom2Action, Foundry BC, Frayme, University of British Columbia, Dalhousie University, and McGill University.
At the McCain Centre, the Youth Engagement Initiative team leads the development of resources for researchers interested in incorporating youth engagement within their research projects.
The Dos and Don'ts of Youth Engagement
A resource that aims to guide researchers on the dos and don’ts of youth engagement in research.
A video created by young people and mental health professionals for scientists on how to navigate and effectively incorporate youth engagement within their research projects. This video was developed with support from the TAY study.
An information sheet created for youth by youth that describes what it means to be involved as a participant in a research study and how to get involved in current research participation opportunities at CAMH.
A collaboration with Healthy Debate: learn more about youth who are making a difference and hear their individual stories of mental health challenges, and experiences with the system and their communities.
Created by the Youth Engagement Initiative, youth wellness resources are a collection of available mental health and addictions supports for youth.
Youth Mental Health Resource Card
A list of mental health and addictions supports for youth. Please note that these resources are for information purposes only and do not constitute an endorsement by CAMH.
