Brain stimulation and psychedelic therapies are sources of tremendous hope for people with hard-to-treat depression and other neuropsychiatric disorders. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation is an approved treatment for adults with depression in many parts of the world, with the Temerty Centre contributing to the research that led to its global use. The Centre is now focused on the next generation of studies in depression, which seek to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of delivering this treatment. rTMS has also demonstrated promise as a treatment for obsessive compulsive disorder and smoking cessation, and is being explored as a potential intervention for other hard-to-treat illnesses.
The Temerty Centre also hopes to identify biological markers of brain stimulation treatment responses in order to ultimately improve — and even personalize — treatments.
When you receive treatment at the Temerty Centre, whether you are a participant in a clinical trial or not, you can expect that you will receive caring treatment, and that your treatment response will be measured with validated questionnaires. The use of questionnaires allows the team to monitor your progress with the treatment. If you are participating in a clinical trial, you will also contribute to research about these treatments that can help other people.
