The CAMH Legal Services student program is a robust program for both articling (August to May) and summer law student internship placements (May to August). These student positions attract students who are eager to have a learning experience with a high caliber in-house legal department dedicated to supporting an internationally recognized psychiatric healthcare facility. Students play a key role in supporting the work of CAMH Legal Services. Although students have opportunities to meet with all of our Legal Counsel in both our clinical and corporate legal teams, students will generally provide support to our Clinical Legal Counsel (civil litigation and forensic) in their work before the Consent and Capacity Board and Forensic Ontario Review Board.
Our fully accredited articling student program has been in place since 2013. As required by the Law Society of Ontario, our program is 10 months in length and usually begins in August and ends in late May or early June each year. We provide supervision, mentoring, education and training in a client-focused work context. On top of the excellent legal experience offered to students and because CAMH is an academic health sciences centre, we work closely with CAMH's Education Services to facilitate unique inter-professional leading opportunities for our students. Compensation offered to articling students is comparable to articling student salaries at government agencies and other public sector organizations.
Summer internships are offered to students interested in litigation/advocacy and/or corporate law. The positions are usually 11-14 weeks in length and are self-funded (fellowships/grants). We provide support in pursuing funding through available scholarships, grants and bursaries.
