Prior to his retirement in March 2018, John Gordon was the Canadian Managing Partner, Quality & Risk Management for KPMG Canada. Reporting directly to the CEO, John was responsible for strategies and implementation of policies and initiatives to monitor and manage quality and risk management.
John was the Canadian Managing Partner, Audit of KPMG from 2012 to 2015. In this role, he was responsible for all aspects of the audit practice, including the firm’s priorities regarding professional excellence, people and quality growth. Prior to February 1, 2012, John was the Office Managing Partner (OMP) for the Calgary office.
John joined KPMG in 1980 and was admitted to the partnership in 1993. In addition to his time in the Calgary office, John served in the London, England office from 1983 to 1985, as the secretary to the CICA Emerging Issues Committee in Toronto during 1990 and 1991, and in the Department of Professional Practice in KPMG US in 1999. John was appointed as the Business Unit Leader of the Calgary Audit Group in 2003. John has also served as a securities reviewing partner and SEC reviewing partner in the Calgary office.
John has worked extensively with junior and senior companies in the energy industry throughout his career. In addition to serving as a lead audit engagement partner, John has provided a variety of transaction related services to non-audit clients, including due diligence assistance, accounting for risk management activities and control evaluations.
John has previously served on the Board of Directors of KPMG Canada and as treasurer and board member for UNICEF Alberta and UNICEF Canada. He has served as a member of the audit committee of the Calgary Exhibition & Stampede and the Alberta Adolescent Recovery Centre. In addition, John has served in oversight roles for a variety of community, school and recreational organizations.
John has also served his profession through involvement in the Education Committee of the ICAA, as a lecturer at ICAA courses, and as an active lecturer and facilitator at various other professional programs including the Audit Committee sessions of the Director’s Education Program of the Institute of Corporate Directors. John was a member of the Calgary executive of the ICD, and has completed the ICD.D program.
