Every year, the National Library of Medicine updates the MeSH (Medical Subject Headings) it uses to index PubMed/Medline; MeSH are replaced, added or dropped to reflect changes in theory and practice.
• The DSM 5 has influenced many of the changes this year. Some examples of new MeSH:
o Autism Spectrum Disorder (Previously Childhood Development Disorders)
o Hoarding Disorder
o Gender Dysphoria
o Feeding and Eating Disorders (Previously Eating Disorders; back indexed to 1983)
o Psychological Trauma
• Others reflect a more modern / intuitive way of expressing a term:
o Intimate Partner Violence replaces Spouse Abuse
o Transitional Care replaces Continuity of Patient Care
• Relating to Substance Abuse / Alcohol:
o Underage Drinking
o Driving Under the Influence
o Prescription Drug Overuse
• Others of interest to Education staff:
o Simulation Training
o Telerehabilitation
o Open Access Publishing
Changes this year are numerous and complex. It is recommended that you always check the MeSH Scope Notes and examine the MeSH Trees to ensure you are searching comprehensively. For information about MeSH and the 2016 changes, go to: https://www.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/introduction.html
