TORONTO, Oct. 2, 2017 - In recognition of Michael H. McCain and his family's latest $10-million commitment in support of the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, bringing his family's total contributions to CAMH to over $22-million, we are honoured to announce the naming of the new McCain Complex Care and Recovery Building.
"The McCain Complex Care and Recovery Building will revolutionize mental health care by offering dignified places for CAMH patients to heal and recover, and providing a safe and generative place for CAMH staff to work," said Dr. Catherine Zahn, CAMH President and CEO. "The building is a powerful symbol of CAMH's move from institutionalization to community integration for the people we serve."
Three generations of the McCain family have played a leadership role in breaking down the stigma around mental health since CAMH was founded in 1998. "This building represents hope. Together, we are building the mental health hospital of tomorrow, today," said Michael McCain. "And there is no legacy more powerful than this one that our family can leave in the world."
The McCain family will help create spaces in which to revolutionize brain stimulation treatments and support faster recovery from mental illness so people can return to living healthier lives sooner. This world-class facility, slated to open in 2020, will feature 110 inpatient beds and eight floors devoted to integrating research and care. Highlights include a Therapeutic Neighbourhood, a 300-seat auditorium, educational and outdoor tranquil spaces, and a culinary-grade training kitchen designed to enable culinary certificate programs.
The McCain Complex Care and Recovery Building will serve as a beacon of hope for respectful and dignified treatment for people living with complex mental illness.
