In commemorating National Volunteer Week (April 6-12, 2014), Governor-General David Johnson described Canada as a “smart and caring nation.” I think that goes for CAMH too – fitting, given the way volunteerism is woven into the CAMH community.
In 2013/2014 we had 1,303 people who gave approximately 130,000 hours of their time, working alongside staff in every corner of CAMH. Our volunteer selection process is selective and diverse. We’re supported by current and former patients, family members, students, graduates, community members and professionals who want to share their talents.
Volunteer with CAMH
Our volunteers do an enormous variety of work – sharing experiences as alumni speakers in the Getting Started program, assisting in research, facilitating art or yoga for patients.
In addition to the individuals who volunteer at CAMH, we have a robust Corporate Volunteer program that brings engagement from a broader community. Since 2007 more than 1,500 corporate employees have visited CAMH, worked and played alongside our patients.
This work brings one of the CAMH strategic plan promises to life: Everyone who touches CAMH will become an advocate for mental health.
Here’s a fantastic quote from a TD Bank employee:
“I did get a sense at CAMH that patients are treated with respect and that sends a powerful message. We can and will help get out your message of respect and tolerance.”
Our volunteers truly are smart and caring – they make CAMH a richer place.
To all our volunteers: Thank you!
