In Part Two of our Thought Spot summer workshop series, we asked our practicum student team to tell us about their involvement. Here are Chelsea’s answers to our 5Qs.
Who are you and what is your position at CAMH?
My name is Chelsea Stunden and I am a Master of Public Health candidate from Simon Fraser University working at CAMH for my summer practicum placement as a research assistant.
What project are you currently involved with?
I’m working on the Thought Spot project. Thought Spot is a mobile app developed by students, to help other post-secondary students in the GTA find mental health and wellness services. The app features mental health and wellness “spots” crowd-sourced by other app users.
We have developed a variety of workshops to host this summer directed towards testing the usability and value of the Thought Spot app.
I’m also in the process of securing some key informant interviews to help with the recruitment and engagement strategy for the 2017 randomized control trial (RCT). The RCT will test how beneficial Thought Spot is in helping students at George Brown College, University of Toronto and Ryerson University find mental health and wellness “spots” as compared to other interventions currently available.
What is the goal of this project?
Mental health issues typically start to develop between the ages of 15 to 24 and most do not receive the help they need. Therefore, the goal of the project is to help post-secondary students find mental health and wellness services more easily, using a medium that is student friendly. The app includes not only mental health services, but also other services that are important to our wellbeing, such as recreation and culture, legal and financial, work and school, and wellness walks to name a few.
We hope the app will encourage post-secondary students in the GTA to look for, and access, any mental health and/or wellness services they are interested in exploring.
Who is this project geared toward?
Post-Secondary students! Right now we are only located in the GTA but we hope to expand the project in the future.
