Physician Course:
In collaboration with the University of Toronto, the Temerty Centre is offering a four-day training program in the clinical application of rTMS to physicians and psychiatrists.rTMS is Health Canada-approved for treating major depression and is being studied for other disorders.
Upon completion of the program, attendees will be able to:
- Summarize evidence-based rTMS treatments for psychiatric disorders
- Determine the clinical applications of rTMS
- Determine clinical indications, contraindications, and appropriate patient selection
- Determine appropriate treatment protocols using rTMS
- Determine the motor threshold
- Approximate treatment spots
- Receive substantial hands-on experience
Accreditation: This course is accredited by the University of Toronto and registrants will be awarded credits from The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, The American Medical Association, and The European Union for Medical Specialists.
Technician Course:
In collaboration with the University of Toronto, the Temerty Centre is offering an intensive training program to teach the administration of rTMS.
rTMS is Health Canada-approved for treating major depression and is being studied for other disorders.
Due to the increased demand for the use of rTMS in the treatment of psychiatric disorders, we predict there will be a sharp increase in the need for technicians to administer this novel treatment.
Upon completion of the program, attendees will be able to:
- Describe the basics of rTMS
- Summarize evidence-based treatments for psychiatric disorders using rTMS
- Assist with determining the motor threshold
- Determine appropriate treatment spots
- Entering protocols in rTMS equipment
- Machine maintenance and upkeep
- Extensive hands-on experience administering rTMS
Accreditation: This course is accredited by the University of Toronto and registrants will be awarded with a certificate of completion from The University of Toronto – Faculty of Medicine
Clinical Fellowship in Brain Stimulation
FELLOWSHIP OVERVIEW
The Temerty Centre is pleased to offer a clinical fellowship for graduates of psychiatry specifically focused on developing considerable expertise in therapeutic brain stimulation. The fellowship experience provides an opportunity for the candidate to gain expertise in the application of novel brain stimulation therapies for treatment refractory psychiatric disorders. This fellowship will focus on treatment-resistant mood and psychotic disorders across the lifespan. One day will be protected for the candidate to pursue an academic project with a specific focus on research, education or quality improvement.
CLINICAL
Each fellow’s training program will be individually tailored to meet the training needs and individual interests of the candidate. The fellowship will include in depth training in the clinical application of repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS). A primary clinical focus will be assessing patients’ suitability for different brain stimulation modalities and following patients through the clinical pathway of treatment within the centre. In addition, assessment and management of patients receiving Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) and Magnetic Seizure Therapy (MST) will be part of the clinical duties. The candidate will be trained to be a fully independent brain stimulation practitioner (i.e., rTMS, MST and ECT) during the course of the fellowship.
RESEARCH
The Temerty Centre has a specialized focus on clinical trials in multiple treatment-resistant disorders, as well as the use of neurophysiological tools to understand and predict outcomes. The fellow will participate in on-going clinical trials within the Temerty Centre and will be involved in the recruitment and retention of research subjects. Some examples of research studies currently ongoing at the centre include the investigation of MST for the treatment of refractory depression; comparative effectiveness trials of novel rTMS parameters for refractory depression; and examining the use of transcranial direct current stimulation to maintain response after MST, ECT and rTMS.
EDUCATION
The fellow will have access to a broad range of multidisciplinary educational events within the Department of Psychiatry and through other departments at U of T, in addition to educational opportunities at CAMH. The fellow will be expected to be involved in the teaching of medical students and psychiatry residents.
TERM and REMUNERATION
This position will start January 1st, 2022. There is possibility of renewal for a second year. Compensation will be provided at the level of a postdoctoral fellow in the Faculty of Medicine. Fellows with an independent practice license will be able to bill OHIP and will not have a cap on their income.
