Population Health and Community Transformation (PHACT)
Population Health and Community Transformation (PHACT) provides health indicators and evidence to monitor substance use and mental health at the population level, generating and analyzing surveys and other data to inform policy and community transformation. PHACT uses both experimentation and modern research technology, such as a driving simulator, to advance health knowledge.
Community, Addiction and Mental Health Research and Evaluation (CARE)
Community, Addiction and Mental Health Research and Evaluation (CARE) provides the evidence base for community-based interventions, including prevention and treatment, using many approaches — from participatory action research to randomized community trials. Our researchers use and advance technology, such as mobile laboratories and e-health interventions, in research, prevention and treatment delivery. We also conduct state-of-the art evaluations of community-based interventions.
Health Outcomes and Performance Evaluation (HOPE)
Health Outcomes and Performance Evaluation (HOPE) analyzes Ontario’s health system performance with respect to care for mental health, substance use and addiction challenges. In close collaboration with ICES, health-related data is analyzed to measure the quality of healthcare performance and associated costs, and to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of health-care interventions, ultimately informing health system improvements. While it has a provincial scope, HOPE also provides crucial data to improve care at CAMH.
Ontario Lab: “O-LAB”
The O-Lab conducts sophisticated modeling to evaluate the effects of preventive and care interventions through the integration and synthesis of multiple sources of data at provincial, national and international levels. The O-Lab embraces the tradition of the “experimenting society,” where policy changes and their long-term effects are rigorously evaluated and predicted to optimize the quality and effectiveness of interventions.
World Health Organization/Pan-American Health Organization (WHO/PAHO) Collaborating Centre in Addiction and Mental Health
The WHO Collaborating Centre monitors alcohol-use trends, a pillar of global estimates of the burden of alcohol-attributable disease. The WHO Collaborating Centre works closely with WHO headquarters in maintaining a global information system on alcohol and health; research and knowledge dissemination on fetal alcohol spectrum disorders; alcohol-attributable infectious disease (HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis); and ongoing monitoring of alcohol consumption, alcohol-attributable harm and alcohol policy.

Ontario Tobacco Research Unit (OTRU)
A research unit co-sponsored by CAMH and the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto, OTRU is an Ontario-based research network focused on tobacco control research; monitoring and evaluation; and teaching and training. OTRU produces the evidence base for the development of effective and efficient tobacco-related public health and policy initiatives.
